Swim!

The girls took swimming lessons last week. Emily liked it a lot more than Sarah Kate did. I think Emily is going to be swimming soon. She did good in her lessons. Their teacher was GREAT!

I think this is a great way to fall asleep!
The teacher asked that the girls wear goggles during the lessons. It made it so much easier for them to put their heads under water.
I heard from a friend this weekend that her children's swim teacher said children should NOT learn to swim with goggles. She explained that if they ever fall in a pool by accident they will feel like they can't swim without their goggles.

I taught swimming lessons for years and I just went with what the parents and children felt most comfortable doing...

My son learned to swim with goggles, and if it weren't for the goggles her probably still wouldn't know how to swim. He is almost 9 and can swim with or without the goggles. I think it just depends on the child and the swim teacher or swim school in our case.

Where are your children taking lessons at? We live in Bentonville and I have wanted to sign my kids up 1 at a time for lessons. I love your blog and your daughters are so CUTE

My little girl is just a little younger than Sarah Kate, and she is learning to blow bubbles and go under too! Our instructor said that they can start however they feel comfortable, but she prefers they move past it quickly for the same reasons! It took about a week, but she is finally opening her eyes (to get a ball) under water.

All I know is, my kids both REUFUSED to put their faces in the water, and I was told not to pay for any more lessons until they would. I wonder if goggles would have helped...?
They did eventually learn to swim, and they actually both worked as lifeguards and swim teachers at the community center! They were the most patient instructors ever...

I think the with/without goggles thing is totally up to the teacher and the children. Whatever gets them swimming is a good thing!

I'm glad the swimming lessons went well! Neither of mine ever took lessons because my in-laws have a pool and we're there all the time and they just learned as they went. But they both learned to swim with flippers and for the longest time flipped out at the thought of not swimming with them. I had to make both of them learn without them because I was always afraid if they fell in without them, they wouldn't be able to swim.
