Raising Girls

My girls have always been very very different from each other.  I always say they are "just night and day."  Emily is a very kind child.  She loves to talk to adults.  She does what is right and is bothered when others do not.  She loves to play with other kids, but she also loves to be by herself and draw and write stories.  She is very sensitive and a deep thinker.  Sometimes I think she is too sweet.  She needs to be more assertive.  She HATES homework.....and math.
Sarah Kate is very strong willed.  She is super friendly and can get along with anyone.  She is very much a leader.  Nothing seems to phase her.  She REFUSES to play by herself.  She rolls with the punches in most cases.  She smiles all the time.  She loves to hug people.  Sarah Kate will meet everyone in a room with confidence.  She likes to do homework.  She is kinda addicted to t.v.  She can throw a BIG TIME FIT.
AND...the older they get the harder it is to parent them.  I have been seeking ways to be a better parent.  I have been reading some great books and picked up another one today.  The Bible is the best guide, I know.

Any books on parenting that you like?

I am the mother of 3 grown daughters and Nonna to a 2 month old grandson. The book that helped me the most was "How to Really Love your Child" by Ross Campbell. I bought the book in the eighties but I believe they updated the book later. It helped me tremendously. There is also a later book called ""How to Love your Teenager" by the same author. It was hard to raise children in the 80's and even more challenging today. Your girls are adorable! Some children who are strong willed and headstrong turn into teenagers who resist peer pressure the best. All my girls turned into very successful members of society with good morals but there were bumps along the road of raising them. Expect the challenges!

Withhold Not Correction (Bruce Ray), Teach Them Diligently (Lou Priolo), The Heart of Anger (just the first chapter or 2ish/Priolo), Parenting in the Pew (Castleman), Don't Make Me Count to Three (Plowman), Hints on Child Training (Trumbell- Elisabeth Elliot's grandfather), Shepherding a Child's Heart (Tripp) , Power of a Praying Parent (Omartian), Successful Christian Parenting (MacArthur), A Life Well-Spent (this isn't parenting per se, but has great perspective - Crosson), Five Converstations You Must Have With Your Daughter (Courtney), Beautifully Made (great series when it's time to talk body stuff- Heramine)...there are nuggets in each. Wish you were closer- you could borrow what you wanted!

Good Post!! I have two girls and I also am finding the same challenges. I recently was at Mardel and they have a section of books about Daughters, and Moms and Girls ect; you may want to try them out. I live in Texas so I don't know if they have a Mardel there in AR, but if so you should try them out.

i feel you! i have three girls and they are SO different!!! it is terrifying to me raising girls in this day and age. one book that i LOVE is "loving our kids on purpose" by danny silk. it is so so good and relevant. he talks a lot about how it's not my job to control my children. it's my job to control myself and by doing so, teaching my children by example how to have their own sense of self control. i can't control them, but i can control how i react to their behavior. i love that he focuses on children's behavior in the book, but he also focuses on the parents, too!

The new strong willed child by Dobson, but all of his books are good.

Great post! All three of my children are so very different. It's definitely not easy to find a parenting style to fit all of their needs.
Laurie, I'm always reading about you and your friendship with Kelly on her blog and I decided to drop by and check out your blog. So glad I did. Such cute girls and I'm betting that you are doing a really good job raising them, but it is a constant work in progress for sure. Blessings to you!

Something Good to Eat

Ever since Steve and I started dating, when we would go to Mississippi, his aunt would make the BEST ROAST IN THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!!! Steve's Dad's side of the family gets together at his Granny's house for lunch every Sunday after church. The food is always sooo good!!!!!!!!!!!! I have always taken a liking to his Aunt Judy's roast. It really is the best roast I have ever had. When we were there on Labor Day weekend, my sister in law asked Aunt Judy for the recipe. Aunt Judy began naming all the ingredients. She said Ranch Dressing mix, and I bugged my eyes out and nearly chocked. I HATE RANCH DRESSING. I don't even like to be in the room with it. I had to focus on the word MIX....not the mayo and butter milk and sour cream that you add to it. Just typing those words makes me shudder. The recipe sounded awful as she rattled off the ingredients, but I promise, you have got to make this if you like a good roast. Trust me on this. Here it is: Get a tender chuck...

Complicated

Maybe I am wrong, but I don't remember life being so complicated when I was in middle school. Everything is so competitive now.  Maybe it was back then and I just didn't realize it. Sarah Kate started playing city league softball a couple of weeks ago.   We've been encouraged to get her private batting lessons. When I was in third grade I started playing softball and I just did it for fun!  No stress at all, as far as I can remember!  I just played.  I wasn't very good, but I liked it! Ha! Emily started band this year!  Before school started, I got a letter from the school district strongly encouraging "your band student to take instrument lessons."  WHAT?  I bought into it and got Emily private clarinet lessons (which she really enjoys)! But, what happened to learning as you go?  I never thought about taking private trumpet lessons when I started band. It seems like most parents are striving for their child to be THE BEST....

Life in Pictures!

Emily is enjoying her first year in band.  I am very impressed with her playing skill! Sarah Kate was recently awarded the empathy award at her school.  She is very deserving of this! Here we are before the Cotillion Holly Ball.
