The Intruder

Last Wednesday afternoon, Steve left to go on a hunting trip.  I hate it when he is away from us, but I would not say that I get scared being alone when he is gone.  We live in a safe neighborhood and our house has a security system.  I am always certain to set it when I leave the house.
Thursday night we did a little photo shoot with Kelly and then went out to eat with Kelly and another friend.  I failed to set the alarm because I did not think we would be gone long and I knew we would be home before dark.  As my mother always says, "everything takes longer than what you think."
We stayed out MUCH later than I expected and did not get home until dark.  It was about 8:00.  We came in to a dark house.  As we were walking in the house I told the girls to go straight to the bathroom.  As we were standing in the entry way, I heard walking and thumping upstairs.  My heart sank!  The only beings that could have made that sound were with me.  Frisco was locked in the laundry room and meowing like crazy.  Kristen the cat was standing in the living room looking like she had seen a ghost.  I knew we needed to get out of there!  SK is heading toward the bathroom and Emily grabs onto me in tears and says, "mama, there's somebody upstairs."  I got doublely scared!
I had a plan......................  I said, "oh girls, we need to run to the grocery store real fast and get some breakfast food."  Emily was crying and SK was asking why we were going to the store.  I grabbed a magnet off the fridge that had the number of the local police department.  I pulled out of the garage and drove over to the next street.  I was going to get a neighbor to go through the house, but they were not at home.  I contemplated asking another neighbor to go through the house, but hated to pull anyone into that situation.  I called the police number and talked to a very very nice lady.  I told her the situation and asked if a police could come without his lights or sirens off and just walk through the house and check the attic.  She asked the address and asked me a lot of questions.  I slowly drove to a nearby grocery store.  She told me she had an officer that would meet me there on the parking lot and get the key.  Within one minute of the call, we see a police with lights and sirens.  He pulls in the nieghborhood.  Then we see another police with lights and sirens.  And then another.....and another.  The lady had asked me to stay on the line with her and I asked if it was nessassary to have ALL these police????? She said they had to have back up.  There were SIX police cars and one unmarked vehicle.  I was just about to die of chawedness.  I just wanted ONE officer to go through the house. ONE...just one.  She told me to go back to the neighborhood and wait with an officer down the street.  One of the police comes over to my car and I knew him!  He is one of the nicest men in the world.  He told me they were sending a dog through the house.  I freaked and said, "I have two cats in there!"  He told me they would NOT send the dog in.  Several officers went in.  After about five minutes the officers says, "nothing in there but two scared cats and a varment in the attic."  I called the police for a RAT!  Or a squirrel!
Happy that we are safe.  The police went above and beyond the call of duty!  Thank you men for taking care of us.
We have pest control men coming to take care of the critter.
Emily tells everyone she sees this story.
AND.....when we came in the house, Frisco's laundry room door was open.  He was GONE.  There was no Kristen to be found either.  They were nowhere.  I was so sad.  I looked in Kristen's hiding place.....under our bed.....and there she was WITH Frisco.  They were side by side.  Not hissing or biting.  They bonded in a crisis!

Oh Laurie, I am so glad you were all okay. I know you were all scared and glad you contacted the police. Hope able to get rid of whatever was in your attic. Couldn't believe that Kristen and Friscoe were peacefully together. Love you all, Kay-K

I'm so sorry you had to go through this but I'm glad that it was "only" a creature and not a person. Also, it's good to know your cats will be together in a crisis :)

It is my worst fear to come home to an intruder or to have our house broken into when we are home. I'm so glad it was only a rat!

I would have done the exact same thing you did! How scary!!! We live in the country and have rats get in our attic. They are SO loud!! We have had a roofer, pest control and a few grown men search our house high and low trying to figure out how they get in. Can't find their entry hole for anything. Glad it all turned out ok.

Laurie - I read your blog all the time, and I am bad about commenting (I don't ever comment), but I had to comment on this post and say that I am so glad you and your family are ok. So glad there was no crazy person in your house!

I totally would have called the police, too, Laurie! My husband was deployed the past 6 months and I called in a neighbor for a suspicious sound. At least we were already in the house with the doors locked, though! Laughing about the cats!! :)

Oh. My. Goodness. Your story gave me goosebumps! I can not imagine being home & thinking someone else was in the house. So scary! Thanking God you are safe.

Girl, I would have done the same thing! And I think 6 police officers showing up for a rat or raccoon in the attic is totally acceptable. I hate rats.

My heart was beating so fast reading this. I drove away once while my husband was gone. I clicked the garage door opener once. I saw the door going down and drove away. I cam back at night and it was open. We also have an alarm that I did not set. I was so scared. I called the police and they came out but no one had been in my house. Turned out the rack was in the way of the sensor, so the door went back up. I never leave my house until the garage door is all the way down and the alarm is set.

So happy it was just a critter for you. Hope you get the darn thing. I know they can be loud!

Oh my gosh I had chills reading this! You were so quick to think of a good excuse to calmly get your kids out, I do not think I would be that clear headed!

Something Good to Eat

Ever since Steve and I started dating, when we would go to Mississippi, his aunt would make the BEST ROAST IN THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!!! Steve's Dad's side of the family gets together at his Granny's house for lunch every Sunday after church. The food is always sooo good!!!!!!!!!!!! I have always taken a liking to his Aunt Judy's roast. It really is the best roast I have ever had. When we were there on Labor Day weekend, my sister in law asked Aunt Judy for the recipe. Aunt Judy began naming all the ingredients. She said Ranch Dressing mix, and I bugged my eyes out and nearly chocked. I HATE RANCH DRESSING. I don't even like to be in the room with it. I had to focus on the word MIX....not the mayo and butter milk and sour cream that you add to it. Just typing those words makes me shudder. The recipe sounded awful as she rattled off the ingredients, but I promise, you have got to make this if you like a good roast. Trust me on this. Here it is: Get a tender chuck...

Complicated

Maybe I am wrong, but I don't remember life being so complicated when I was in middle school. Everything is so competitive now.  Maybe it was back then and I just didn't realize it. Sarah Kate started playing city league softball a couple of weeks ago.   We've been encouraged to get her private batting lessons. When I was in third grade I started playing softball and I just did it for fun!  No stress at all, as far as I can remember!  I just played.  I wasn't very good, but I liked it! Ha! Emily started band this year!  Before school started, I got a letter from the school district strongly encouraging "your band student to take instrument lessons."  WHAT?  I bought into it and got Emily private clarinet lessons (which she really enjoys)! But, what happened to learning as you go?  I never thought about taking private trumpet lessons when I started band. It seems like most parents are striving for their child to be THE BEST....

Life in Pictures!

Emily is enjoying her first year in band.  I am very impressed with her playing skill! Sarah Kate was recently awarded the empathy award at her school.  She is very deserving of this! Here we are before the Cotillion Holly Ball.
