Tubes Today

I have not talked about Sarah Kate's health too much lately, but she has continued to have ear infections since October. In fact, she has had five and has been on SEVEN antibiotics. We have continued to see the Dr. every week or two. We FINALLY got referred to an ENT and saw him on Monday. He said her ears were terrible and scheduled her for ear tubes this morning. Her ears have had so much thick fluid, that it was not able to drain and just continued to get one infection after the other. Her sleeping has been HORRIBLE! She has had about 50% hearing.

We are soooooooo THANKFUL she got these tubes!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The worst part about today was that she could not have anything to eat or drink. She is like me, she loves to eat and she does not miss a meal. Of course she woke up asking for her milk. Then when we got to the surgery center we had to wait......
and wait..........................
and wait...............they pulled out all the tricks: t.v. with cartoons, a wagon.............
Steve took a few hours off to be with us. We took Emily because it was just the easiest thing to do this morning. She was great!
Here I am holding SK in the recovery room. They said she was good....(it was probably like wrestling a bear.)
She was so glad to get home and eat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Her eyes are still a little puffy here.
I promised Emily a special treat if she was good at the hospital. Hillary had brought her this cupcake sucker. Thanks Hillary, you saved the day!

Oh, Laurie…. I cannot even begin to express to you how much I can relate to SK right now! I had tubes after tubes put in when I was younger and even as an adult have had ear surgery after ear surgery and have another ear surgery scheduled this Friday.
I know all too well. But I hope this will cure the ear infections for SK!!! Looks like she took it like a trooper!

Laurie, SK already looks like her ears are feeling better.
I was just sitting down to email you to see if you were okay. I am so glad that SK did well at her surgery and hopefully she will start feeling better immediately. We missed you this morning! Can you believe that I've made it 2 weeks in a row? My new attitude is helping!

Bless your heart. We have only had one ear infection and it was rough so I cannot imagine how miserable you and SK have been the past few months. Hopefully, these will help! I always hear good things from parents whose children have them.

Give SK a hug from us. I hope this will make her feel better and plus she should hear better as well. Bless her heart. Glad she is doing ok.

Oh gosh we are scheduled to have tubes with my one year old on Friday. Glad to hear things went well!

So glad all of that's over! "Like wrestling a bear..." haha! She might be on the wild side but I sure do love her. Glad E was able to get her "treat". They tasted a little like stale cotton candy but they sure were cute!
Oh goodness Laurie, I pray this helps SK's ears!!! My boys never had to have tubes, but my best friend just had her 1 year old have some and the next day he was a new kid.. I pray SK is feeling better soon!

I am so glad Sarah Kate did so well. We are thinking our 9 month old may need tubes. She has had several ear infections since Oct. also and has been on 5 different antibiotics. We can't tell if it's the same infection or numerous. I have had several friends with children who say that the tubes worked out great! Sarah Kate should be sleeping soon for you!

Aren't tubes wonderful? My son is on his second set and is doing wonderfully! Before tubes, his hearing was only 35%, but now is within the normal range. I also have a tube in my right ear and I can tell you that you notice a difference immediately! Good luck!

So glad things went well...I predict this will be life changing. Annie had them put in very early...why can't I remember exactly??? But it was a MIRACLE for us. Not a single ear infection after and MUCH IMPROVED sleeping. I pray the very same for SK and the rest of you! (I can't figure out why they make kids wait so long before referring to an ENT!!!!)

So glad she had this done. Annika has a little permanent hearing loss b/c of her infections, but we are so thankful she no longer gets sick. Did the dr.tell you to be prepared when she has a cold, it will all come out of her nose now? That helped me not panic to expect that.

oh sweet sk!! my son, bauer, had the EXACT same situation...and even though i didn't want them...we agreed to get tubes. it took them FOUR weeks to drain all that nasty infection and blood out, but once they did...it was like a miracle! he immediately began talking and feeling so much better!! i will keep you, sk, and the whole family in our prayers!! :)

Hi Laurie...I read your blog pretty often but dont comment but I had to ask about the darling dresses your girls wore to Harper's birthday...do you do them or do you have a seller you can refer me to? I loved the 2 prints together and I love pillowcase dresses. Glad the tubes went well and it will be life changing all 3 of mine have/had them and they are a blessing!
This will be such a blessing for you! It completely changed my life when Owen was little and had constant ear infections! I will pray that this will make a huge difference for her and a less stressful life with less illness for the rest of you!
Laurie, I read your blog but have never commented before....BOTH my boys have had tubes (my youngest is on his 3rd set)-but they are THE MOST WONDERFUL THINGS EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!! You will be so glad you made the decision to have tubes in her ears!!!! I recall less than 5 minutes after my boy's birth I asked the Dr. where the ENT was so we could go ahead and schedule a set! ha!

Bless her little heart! My son Greg had tubes put in his ears for the same reasons a little over a year ago. When he came out it was like someone had turned the volume up on the world! His speech improved within weeks also. Poor guy, we thought he had just been ignoring us, when really, he didn't hear us! It's so hard to watch them take your baby away into surgery but it sounds like it was a good choice for your family. Glad to hear she is doing better! Saw your girls dresses on Kelly's blog - adorable! They looked so cute!!

Hi Laurie, I wanted to pass something on to you in hopes it may help your little girl. Have you heard that there is a link between pacifiers and ear infections. If you google it you will read about several studies that have found this fact. My own son loved is passy and had multiple ear infections. It would be a shame if she had to have tubes again. I just wanted to pass this information on to you.

Complicated

Maybe I am wrong, but I don't remember life being so complicated when I was in middle school. Everything is so competitive now.  Maybe it was back then and I just didn't realize it. Sarah Kate started playing city league softball a couple of weeks ago.   We've been encouraged to get her private batting lessons. When I was in third grade I started playing softball and I just did it for fun!  No stress at all, as far as I can remember!  I just played.  I wasn't very good, but I liked it! Ha! Emily started band this year!  Before school started, I got a letter from the school district strongly encouraging "your band student to take instrument lessons."  WHAT?  I bought into it and got Emily private clarinet lessons (which she really enjoys)! But, what happened to learning as you go?  I never thought about taking private trumpet lessons when I started band. It seems like most parents are striving for their child to be THE BEST.  I guess that's a go

Something Good to Eat

Ever since Steve and I started dating, when we would go to Mississippi, his aunt would make the BEST ROAST IN THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!!! Steve's Dad's side of the family gets together at his Granny's house for lunch every Sunday after church. The food is always sooo good!!!!!!!!!!!! I have always taken a liking to his Aunt Judy's roast. It really is the best roast I have ever had. When we were there on Labor Day weekend, my sister in law asked Aunt Judy for the recipe. Aunt Judy began naming all the ingredients. She said Ranch Dressing mix, and I bugged my eyes out and nearly chocked. I HATE RANCH DRESSING. I don't even like to be in the room with it. I had to focus on the word MIX....not the mayo and butter milk and sour cream that you add to it. Just typing those words makes me shudder. The recipe sounded awful as she rattled off the ingredients, but I promise, you have got to make this if you like a good roast. Trust me on this. Here it is: Get a tender chuck

Life in Pictures!

Emily is enjoying her first year in band.  I am very impressed with her playing skill! Sarah Kate was recently awarded the empathy award at her school.  She is very deserving of this! Here we are before the Cotillion Holly Ball.
