I Have To Laugh or I WIll Cry!

This has been a week!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When I was getting ready this morning, Emily gave herself "the perfect mullet." I came into the living room and my heart sank. There was hair everywhere and Emily had a mullet. I cried, then I would laugh, cry, laugh, cry, laugh. I called Steve and he did not answer. I called my Mom and I called Kelly. Emily cried with me. All I knew to do was get in the car and find a professional who could help us. In the meantime, SK put some of the hair on the floor in her mouth and that was an ordeal. Emily was crying, I was crying and Sarah Kate was crying. The first salon I came to helped us. Steve came and met us there to see the hair and talk to Emily.
This is the sad thing.................... Emily is proud of her work. Loves the new " do."

I am sad, but I realize it is only hair. It will grow. I did the same thing around the same age under the kitchen table. Ever cut your hair as a child????????????????

As E was putting her shoes on, I realized she had also colored on the new painted built- ins and wall. I have tried Magic Eraser and it changed the color. I am just going to call the painters to come back. Some of you asked about the new wall color. It is called Danish Pine from Pittsburg Paints. I actually got the paint at Sherwin Williams because they can do computer color matches and I had some coupons.
I will post more pictures later. We stopped by Aunt Kelly's and she took some pictures of the mullet. I needed a friend to laugh with me!

More pics coming soon. Emily is asleep right now.

I know EXACTLY how you feel. My little girl did the same thing. But, it was her bangs and there was no fix'n that!!

my mother says every parent gets their "revenge" - now you know exaclty how your sweet mother felt. which is HORRID! thank the heavens she is a cute kid, you don't have any big pictures coming and most of all - she has a personality! what was her immediate reaction when you walked into the living room?

Oops, I'll try that again because my last comment made zero sense.

I'm visiting from Kelly's blog - sorry to hear about the mullet!

You might try rubbing alcohol to clean your built-in's. My boys used green perm. marker on my finished hardwoods and window trim - it worked! I read about it in Simple magazine - love that magazine ;) Good luck!

Bless sweet Emily's heart! If it makes you feel better, last year when I was teaching Pre K, I had to tell two or three parents about their children cutting their hair. It was awful! I almost cried because I felt so bad that it happened in the classroom. One little girl's mullet made her look like a something straight out of the 80's and the sad thing is her mom didn't get it fixed! One day you will laugh really hard about this!
It is a rite of passage for little ones for some strange reason. My oldest son cut a huge chunk all the way to his scalp when he was about this age and was so proud of himself. We had to buzz him, not so easy for a cute little girl though. It will grow out and she is still beautiful.

Found you from Kelly's blog! Glad you were able to remedy the mullet.

If it's crayon on the wall - baby wipes work well.

She is ADORABLE even with her new "do!" Ha, ha! Bless all of your hearts. What a day! : )

Hi Laurie -
You don't know me, but I'm a reader of Kelly's blog and had to take a peak at your daughter's "new do!" Thankfully hair will grow and you got a good laugh out of it - kids are so funny! I love the paint color you used on the mantle and built-ins - I am thinking of painting my kitchen cabinets a color like that. Would you mind sharing what color it was? Thanks so much and have a great day!

Bless it! I know it's just hair, but I think that would be a traumatic experience for any mama!! I am sure she looks as cute as ever with her new do!

My cousin did that one time and cut her bangs all the way to the root! It was horrible for about 6 months! Emily still looks precious as always! Bless your heart for having such a bad day!

Visiting from Kelly's blog - My daughter did that about a year and a half ago. I cried too but it has grown out without ever having to cut the back shorter to make it look even. Now it just looks layered, like we did it on purpose. Then last November, my son cut my daughter's hair which is how she got bangs....all I could think of were those scissors by my daughters eyes...ugh. I know everyone at some point goes through it but it is so awful in that moment! Good luck!

Rubbing alcohol works wonders. It took Sharpie off of wooden doors last year for me. Lots of elbow grease and rubbing alcohol on the wood should take it right off!

Oh Laurie!!!!! I came straight home after talking to you and looked at your blog! You have had the worst week! I'm sure her hair looks really cute in a bob. But I can't imagine how SICK you felt to see all that gorgeous hair on the floor! This is really funny!

I didn't cut my hair, but I did trim part of my eyebrow, and of course it was right before a big family party. I think I was around five.

Two of my boys have cut their hair, too. I guess it is a rite of passage for children. One of my older boys put gum in his brother's hair the night before picture day and did not tell me. I noticed on the way out the door!

Check out the haircut my Goddaughter gave herself!

Awe...what a day! I can't imagine what my reaction would be after seeing this..ha..ha...

Bonnie and I used to "cut" each other's hair all the time, my mom had to hide ALL scissors in the house. She chopped mine off to the scalp once..my Mom was livid! The good thing about hair is it grows back..thank the Lord! :)

I'll take running with scissors any old time over actually cutting with them. My daughter called me one morning and she was practically hysterical over the fact that her girls age 3 and 5 had played "beauty shop". After the 5 year old convinced the 3 year old to let her give her a make-over she obviously thought better of it and wouldn't let the 3 year old reciprocate. Or, maybe the 3 year old was a better hairdresser. Just remember there are a lot worse things that could potentially happen with a child and scissors. :)

I think her little short hair cut is cute!!!

Oh no! Rhett has cut his own hair twice--down to the scalp, so I can understand a little what you're feeling (although I think it must be much more difficult when a little girl cuts her long hair!) Her new do does look cute on her though! I'm so sorry that happened. :(

Omigosh, my Sarah did this when she was three right before she was going to be the flower girl in a wedding! We had just tried on her head wreath, and she looked A-dorable in it with her naturally curly locks in ringlets around her head - then, out she bounces from the bathroom and I looked at her and knew she looked different, but couldn't quite...AACKKK! She cut her hair TO THE SCALP in some places! I called my niece who cuts hair and started bawling - then, like you, I started laughing - then I realized the bride may not want her in the wedding - bawling - it's only hair - laughing...

Long story "short" - I took her to a professional hair dresser and she cut it into a cute wedge - and the bride still wanted her - so many people remember the wedding and ask Sarah now, "oh, you're the one who cut her hair off!" (She's 17 now.) I also have an Emily - but she never cut her hair so I had no previous experience.

Please blog a lot this week so those of us who usually check Kelly's blog can visit you while she's not blogging! (Although I do visit your blog even when Kelly's blogging...)

Hugs from Alaska! L.

P.S. Crest toothpaste (not the gel) gets permanent marker off a lot of things - I've tried it on an oak table and it works great!

Oh goodness, yes I know THAT feeling... my daughter did it a year ago. AND when I took to a professional to fix it, they gave her a perfect BOWL cut. It was a distasterous hair day at our house ha! But you're right, it grows back, and then it's really funny. Hairspray gets Sharpie off any hard surface (as in ALL of my white kitchen cabinets), but not sure about other types of pens. Hoping for a better day for you tomorrow :)

Visiting for the first time through Kelly's Blog...

Can I just tell you that my youngest daughter (who is now 5 1/2) has cut her hair not once, but TWICE? The first time was the day before her 4th birthday party and the second time was 13 months later when she was 5 and totally knew better!

I whisked her off to the beauty shop the first time, and I think she really enjoyed that... potentially too much, if she was willing to do it for a second time a year later.

When I asked her why she cut her hair the second time she replied, "I couldn't find any paper."

Seriously. Totally deadpan.

I didn't know whether to roar with laughter or cry out in fear of what her future escapades will almost certainly entail.

You are not alone!!

Thanks for the laughs. I have ceretainly walked in your shoes before when it comes to hair cutting... It will be a great story for years to come.

Hi Laurie,
I came to your site from Kelly's. I had to check out the haircut! A few years ago my then 6 year old daughter "accidentally" cut my 4 year old daughter's hair TWO days before their Christmas pictures! I still had their pictures taken! That was a true scrapbook moment!!!
Oh Laurie - what a week. I cut my own bangs when I was 3 or 4 & they were VERY short for a VERY long time. The new do is really cute, though.

Hi...one of Kelly's followers here. I know how you must have felt when your beautiful daughter cut her hair, but to tell you the truth, this new "do" looks even better. It shows off her pretty little face even better and accentuates her darling little cheeks!

Girl, you just gotta laugh! My daughters school called me a month or so ago and wanted to warn me of the new haircut my daughter was wearing home. I can sympathize with you completely!

Scrubbing Bubbles gets marker and crayon off walls reallly well, without taking off the paint...my son did something similar to his hair with my brother in laws mustache trimmer last year...put it right in the MIDDLE of his head...it was a nice look for him ;)!

my mother was a preschool teacher for 20 years and she said there was not one year that she didnt have a student come in one morning with a new "haircut."

One of my kids did this once but thankfully I walked in in the middle so the damage was minimal. Im sure I have many more "haircuts" in the future...my daughter is only 19 months old.

and as for the marker on the wall...its amazing how much google can help! my 4 year old wrote his name on our dining room table pads with a Sharpie! i googled it and it said to write over it with a dry erase marker and then just wipe with a wet cloth...couldnt believe it, but it worked!!

these kids....so cute, but sooo much trouble!

I am a follower of Kelly and saw your blog so I thought I would stop by.
Let me tell you what... as a hairstylist myself, I have seen some really bad self creations! But she must have done a pretty even job to get that cute of a style! You might have a little hairstylist on your hands! I starting cutting my Barbie's hair as a child and still doing hair and loving it more every day! But hopefully you wont have to go through that again, btw once a child does it once they are over it! ~Amanda

Complicated

Maybe I am wrong, but I don't remember life being so complicated when I was in middle school. Everything is so competitive now.  Maybe it was back then and I just didn't realize it. Sarah Kate started playing city league softball a couple of weeks ago.   We've been encouraged to get her private batting lessons. When I was in third grade I started playing softball and I just did it for fun!  No stress at all, as far as I can remember!  I just played.  I wasn't very good, but I liked it! Ha! Emily started band this year!  Before school started, I got a letter from the school district strongly encouraging "your band student to take instrument lessons."  WHAT?  I bought into it and got Emily private clarinet lessons (which she really enjoys)! But, what happened to learning as you go?  I never thought about taking private trumpet lessons when I started band. It seems like most parents are striving for their child to be THE BEST.  I guess that's a go

Something Good to Eat

Ever since Steve and I started dating, when we would go to Mississippi, his aunt would make the BEST ROAST IN THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!!! Steve's Dad's side of the family gets together at his Granny's house for lunch every Sunday after church. The food is always sooo good!!!!!!!!!!!! I have always taken a liking to his Aunt Judy's roast. It really is the best roast I have ever had. When we were there on Labor Day weekend, my sister in law asked Aunt Judy for the recipe. Aunt Judy began naming all the ingredients. She said Ranch Dressing mix, and I bugged my eyes out and nearly chocked. I HATE RANCH DRESSING. I don't even like to be in the room with it. I had to focus on the word MIX....not the mayo and butter milk and sour cream that you add to it. Just typing those words makes me shudder. The recipe sounded awful as she rattled off the ingredients, but I promise, you have got to make this if you like a good roast. Trust me on this. Here it is: Get a tender chuck

Life in Pictures!

Emily is enjoying her first year in band.  I am very impressed with her playing skill! Sarah Kate was recently awarded the empathy award at her school.  She is very deserving of this! Here we are before the Cotillion Holly Ball.
