Last Friday I took Emily to the Pediatric Dentist to get her cavity filled. She behaved WONDERFULLY!!!!!! I had really been anxious about how the appointment would go. I was completely miserable after they gave her a shot in her mouth because they put a cotton stick in her mouth for her to bite on. The reason I was miserable was because I was afraid she would choke on it. I call it a cotton stick, but I know there is a real name for it. It was about an inch long and about the size of a thick pencil. At first, she just bit down on it and I was not too worried. As her mouth got numb, she began chewing on it like a cow chewing a cud. She was lying flat on her back. I could just see the cotton going down her throat and choking her to death. The nurse told me they give them to kids so that they will not bite their tongue or mouth once it becomes numb. I thought to myself,"what would be better for her to choke or to bite her tongue or mouth?" I asked the nurse if anyone had ever choked on one of those things. She said no, but there was always a first time and she hoped Emily would not be the one. Then she told me that she needed to keep it in her mouth for an hour and a half after we left till the numbness wore off. Lovely.
Long story short........... We made it home with no choking and no bites in her mouth.
This week I took Emily to have her eyes checked. She has been telling us that she could not see very well. She would even wake up at night saying that she was going blind. I did not know whether or not to take it seriously or not. She would say she couldn't see when she didn't want to see. For example, when I was going over the letters of the alphabet with her. She was also VERY interested in the episodes of Little House on the Prairie when Mary went blind and began teaching at the blind school. Those episodes aired in December, about the same time she started telling us she could not see well. She also saw a cousin that is a hero to her that wears glasses at Christmas. Emily began that very day saying that she needed glasses. She would always add,"not sunglasses, real glasses."
This week she asked me if the eye clinic had a mirror so she could look at herself to pick out her glasses. She also asked me if "him have dogs that I can get if I am blind?"
She was good as gold at the eye doctor and passed all the test with flying colors. Eye examines are so advanced these days. They took a picture of her eyes and it showed that she was a little far-sighted, but not enough to need correction.
She cried when we got in the car because she did not get glasses. I told her we would go to Claires this week and get her some glasses. (Fake ones)

I was named Laura, after Little House (my parents wanted a spunky girl...be careful what you wish for!) so I also grew up watching those episodes.
About 3 years ago (it was right around the Republican convention), I woke up and looked at the tv and could not read the ticker at the bottom of the screen. I also had trouble with my periferal (sp) vision. As a 30 year old woman, I called my mother and said, "I think I am going blind like Mary on Little House on the Prairie!"
It was seriously the first thing I thought of. That was quite a disturbing episode and sticks with you!
It turned out to be an "eye migraine". Happy to say, I have my sight still.
I just figured out today that on Adsense you can block sensitive headings...I didn't know there was such a thing until my mom called and said there was a Mormom from youtube on my site. I blocked all sensitive heading and hope it doesn't get back on there.

Bless little Emily's heart! I also love Little House. I just finished Alison (Nelly) Arngrim's book and it was very good. Now I'm reading Melissa Gilbert's.
And I wish they'd had those sticks when I was a kid! After getting a cavity filled when I was about her age, I almost chewed a hole through my lower lip, but couldn't feel it so I didn't know. It hurt for weeks. Well, maybe for a few hours-- you know how time is exaggerated when you're a kid. Either way, I remember it being awful!
