My Look- Alikes

I taught elementary art for twelve years. In that time, I met all kinds of children. Since I taught art, I had every child in the school. Towards the end of my teaching career, I got a 4th grade boy that was new to the town and new to our school. He was a good looking kid and full of self-confidence. On his first day in my room, I was introducing myself and asking him about himself. As we were talking he said, "Hey. were you the girl in Planet of the Apes?" I don't think he was trying to be rude or smart. I looked him in the eye and said, "yes, I was in that movie." He was amazed-thrilled. After the students got started on their art I leaped over to the computer and found this beautiful ape girl. If that did not boost my self esteem, I don't know what would. Ha! I printed this picture, took it over to him and he said,"cool!" He looked the picture over and then he looked me over. I told him that no, I was not in that movie but I guess we sorta look alike. He said, "yes, its the hair and mouth and eyes."
I have held on to this picture for the last eight or so years. Every time I see it I laugh.

The other week, Sarah Kate was on her changing table. She looked at this elephant painting across the room and said, "it's you mama!' I said, "do I look like that elephant?"
She said, "YES!"
Last night I went into her room to take this picture. She said, You taking a picture of yourself mama?"

Oh well, what can I say?

This is really neither here nor there, but I've always been curious and I don't know anybody who does it.... when your girls get older, like in middle school, high school, or once they are out of the house, will you go back to work?

Those stories BOTH crack me up!!!! :) They also remind me of what happened in my classroom today...

we were reading "The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane" during read aloud and the author introduced one of the characters as being "lumpy." Well, we stopped and talked about what that meant and what other words mean the same. Anyway, I made a (little) joke about myself being lumpy and the class erupted saying, "NO WAY. YOU ARE NOT LUMPY OR FAT. NOT EVEN CLOSE!" Then, in the middle of dead silence (right after they got done yelling that) one little boy said, "Well, maybe you are just a little bit."

Yep, that made my day! ;) Only, I was bummed I couldn't say, "Well, honey, thank you for being honest, but you see...not everyone looks like your mom who has been a NEGATIVE 2 her entire life. Sweet boy, I forgive you, for that's really all you know about being lumpy (or a major LACK thereof) and have grown up with!" :) :)

Gotta love those "kid comments!"

Don't forget about the snowman ornament. Didn't Emily say it looked like you?
I for one think you're one foxy lady. Although I did see some Baboons on tv a couple nights ago and said to Josh, "there's Laurie." He looked at me like I was crazy and mean!
I laughed so hard at this that tear were in my eyes! My goodness, that is hilarious!!!! This year, one of my students was giving an example from history to discuss something that happened in our novel, and she began with, "Back in the ancient time, like in 1970 . . ." I almost died trying not to smile since that was the year I was born! Gotta love teaching! I laugh every single day!
I about peed on myself from laughing. Thats crazy! You don't look like either but that was a great laugh for me on this insane day.

Oh my gosh, Laurie, this is quite possibly the most hysterical post EVER. I literally have tears running down my cheek from laughing so hard. My husband came up to see if I was okay. ;)

Ahh, laughter IS the best medicine. Thank you!

That is hilarious!!!!! You do not look like a monkey or an elephant.
You know H pointed at the TV and said "momma" when she saw Anna Nicole Smith. That was not a compliment either.

I'd totally laugh out loud, but it's nap time!!!!!!!

Ok, so I have an art question for you- can you recommend a book (that I can buy online) that has a lot of pictures- not too terribly wordy (because she knows little English)- and would be good for an elementary art teacher? We have an artist that comes to the house to teach the children each week and she also teaches young children in a school; I thought it'd be a fun thing to gift her with at Christmas.

HIlarious! I teach 7th grade and I have heard some doosies, but I think your story beats ANY of mine. LOVE that you told him you really were in the movie. I would So do that same, only I'm not sure I would tell him the difference so fast. HeeHee. You DO NOT look like either- especially the elephant. I bet the elephant is her favorite picture and that is why she thinks of you.

That was sooooo funny! You are such a good sport. I have my share of that in my house too. I play Words with Friends with my 11 year old son. One night I played the word "hag". When he played back, he also commented. His comment said "When I saw the word Hag, I thought of you." Nice. But what can I say? Bahahahahaha!!!
I also loved the post about how Emily was just looking at the "beautiful wall" when her sisters eye got cut! So precious! Keep blogging!!

That is so funny! When I was a substitute teacher, I had a fourth grader ask me if I played Nala in The Lion King! He said I looked just like her!

Something Good to Eat

Ever since Steve and I started dating, when we would go to Mississippi, his aunt would make the BEST ROAST IN THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!!! Steve's Dad's side of the family gets together at his Granny's house for lunch every Sunday after church. The food is always sooo good!!!!!!!!!!!! I have always taken a liking to his Aunt Judy's roast. It really is the best roast I have ever had. When we were there on Labor Day weekend, my sister in law asked Aunt Judy for the recipe. Aunt Judy began naming all the ingredients. She said Ranch Dressing mix, and I bugged my eyes out and nearly chocked. I HATE RANCH DRESSING. I don't even like to be in the room with it. I had to focus on the word MIX....not the mayo and butter milk and sour cream that you add to it. Just typing those words makes me shudder. The recipe sounded awful as she rattled off the ingredients, but I promise, you have got to make this if you like a good roast. Trust me on this. Here it is: Get a tender chuck

Complicated

Maybe I am wrong, but I don't remember life being so complicated when I was in middle school. Everything is so competitive now.  Maybe it was back then and I just didn't realize it. Sarah Kate started playing city league softball a couple of weeks ago.   We've been encouraged to get her private batting lessons. When I was in third grade I started playing softball and I just did it for fun!  No stress at all, as far as I can remember!  I just played.  I wasn't very good, but I liked it! Ha! Emily started band this year!  Before school started, I got a letter from the school district strongly encouraging "your band student to take instrument lessons."  WHAT?  I bought into it and got Emily private clarinet lessons (which she really enjoys)! But, what happened to learning as you go?  I never thought about taking private trumpet lessons when I started band. It seems like most parents are striving for their child to be THE BEST.  I guess that's a go

Life in Pictures!

Emily is enjoying her first year in band.  I am very impressed with her playing skill! Sarah Kate was recently awarded the empathy award at her school.  She is very deserving of this! Here we are before the Cotillion Holly Ball.
