Here We Go Again!

October has become a scary month for us.
Last October: I had a tooth infection that seemed to never end. I had two root canals on the same tooth.
I got a staph infection in my finger. It healed after taking 6 antibiotics and a lot of prayer.
The WHOLE family got the stomach virus.
Sarah Kate cut her finger and we had to go to the E.R.
Both girls had ear infections.

Fast forward to this year:
I get another tooth infection in another tooth. I have a root canal. My mouth is still "not right."
A man hits my car in the Walmart parking lot.
Last night, Sarah Kate cut her eye in the bath tub. We went to the E.R. and three hours later they glued her cut back together.

I said it before and I will say it again, I am going to go on a month long vacation on an island every October.

My Tooth update:
The Dentist called me back about my tooth pain. He was very nice and said that I should get better everyday. He said that this was not uncommon. I am clenching my teeth real bad at night and this seems to be setting me back. I am hurting now, only at night.(Praise) I spent a couple of nights sleeping with a wash cloth in my mouth to keep my mouth open. Attractive I know.

I have been taking Clindamycin for my tooth infection and it is simply awful. They forget to put on the side effects that it will cause the worst ever heart-burn. I feel like acid has been poured down my throat. I just can't eat. (which may be a good thing) I feel like I am choking every time I eat or drink. It is worse than when I was pregnant.
I went to visit a friend yesterday and I was hurting so bad with heartburn. I told her that if I fell over dead to tell the EMT that my esophagus had ruptured.

The Latest Crazy:
Last night the girls were taking a bath. I had gotten them started and then I was helping Steve gather the trash cans for trash pick-up. Emily started screaming and crying for me to come in there. Emily was standing and Sarah Kate was sitting down crying as blood was pouring out of her eyelid. I could not tell at the moment if it was her actual eye or lid. It was pitiful. But, Emily did a LOT more crying than Sarah Kate did. Emily was soooooo upset. We think that Sarah Kate hit her eye on a little toy watering can. We wonder if Emily was trying to pull it away from her.
I don't think we will ever know the real story. According to Emily, she "was just sitting in the bath tub looking at the beautiful wall and when she looked at Sarah Kate her eye was bleeding."

Hummmmmmmmm......makes you wonder. Emily said a LONG prayer for SK's recovery last night.

We took her to the E.R. and they used Dermabond to glue her eye back together. Emily stayed with a sweet friend of ours who is a pediatric nurse. I had called her about SK's eye. She came and looked at it and said she needed to go to the E.R. She took Emily home with her.
We are thankful they glued it and not used stitches. They say the Dermabond does not scar as bad.

We hope this is the end of craziness for October. Thank you for praying for my tooth.

Oh my goodness you do have a black cloud hanging over your head in October! Okay precious I am going to say something that you might not want to hear but it is honest to goodness meant to help. I know someone who got a root canal and the pain didn't go away, and he needed to get the tooth pulled. Then the pain went away after that. You might have pain/swelling from the infection but keep in mind that sometimes there are cases where root canals are not enough and the tooth has to be pulled. However there is a chance that the pain is due to the infection and the pain will die down once the infection is healed. I will pray for you every day until I hear that this pain is gone! Nerve pain is truly something awful. Praying for you,

Colleen

PS If you ever pull a tooth you can get it replaced with a veneer so you won't have a gap in your teeth so please don't panic at the possibility of a pulled tooth.

First, I'm SOOOOOOOO sorry for your tooth, SK's eye, the whole bit. And I feel so bad about this, but I just can't stop laughing about the whole "sitting here looking at the beautiful wall." That's one of the funniest things I've heard in a long time. I'm giggling so hard I can't even tell Guy--he thinks I'm crazy. I made him come over and read it. Anyway, I hope everyone gets better soon. You are way overdue on a great vacation!!!

Poor Sarah Kate! Hope she feels okay soon!

Oh my goodness! The poor little thing! So glad it wasn't worse. It does seem that there are weeks and entire months where these things happen. I've had several before myself!

Laurie, I am pretty sure you guys are cursed during the month of October :). Your poses these days are cracking me up, but not because I like to hear about your family sick or hurting, just because of the way you put it. I hope your tooth is feeling better!! Bless SKs heart!! I hope her eye gets to feeling better!! You're right-you need to visit an island during the month of October!!

Bless her heart! My 5 year old has an almost identical scar. I hope you have better luck with the Dermabond than we did :( In hindsight, I wish I had insisted on stitches but the Dermabond just seemed like the better (and less painful!) option at the time. I think next October you should take a month long vacation!! Prayers for quick healing of SK's eye!! I love Emily's story and extra long prayer. Kids are hilarious. My son's new MO is "but I'm telling the truth so I shouldn't get in trouble"!

goodness, i hope a black cat doesn't cross your path too. :) that is too much of a cawinkydink! :) hope you stay safe!

I debated saying anything about the Dermabond because I didn't want to upset you but I was really not happy with how the cut healed. He was left with a nice scar that still would have been a scar with stitches but it would have been much smaller. The stitches would have held it together better (at least according to the plastic surgeon). We're going to let him decide if he wants to have the plastic surgeon try to correct it when he's old enough to make such a decision :) I hope you have much better luck with SK's healing! It's widely used for kids so I'm guessing our result was just a fluke. My friend's son had a better experience and his scar is barely visible.

Holy cow! I can see why you want to take a vacation every October! I hope SK's eye heals quickly! My son fell on a slide at a pool party and split his chin. They used dermabond on him and it healed very well with only a minimal scar. SO much better than stitches! Hang in there, October's almost half over.

BLESS YOUR HEARTS! I will say a long prayer for you guys, too!
Sweet mercy! October REALLY isn't a good month for ya'll!!! I hope the craziest and worst is over and that it's all uphill until November. :)

Oh my goodness, Laurie! October is most definitely NOT your month. Bless your heart. And your tooth.

The story about Emily just looking at the beautiful wall and saying a long prayer for SK made me laugh.

Here's to November being right around the corner!

October for you, July for me! We just did the whole dermabond deal with my 2 year old- of course, while daddy is out of country and in the middle of the night! After it heals up, you can buy some scar cream at Walgreens and apply it several times a day to help it smooth out; you just don't want it to get sunburned.

My goodness girl!! I really hope ya'll start having less stressful situations.. since there is still half of the month left!!! ;-)

Hi there. I don't usually comment but I wanted to reassure you that SK's eye will likely be fine. I say that because as a child I fell on a table in the living room and cut my eye open in a similar fashion. It left the smallest tiniest scar near where your eye creases shut naturally and no-one has ever noticed it unless I pointed it out to them. I suspect your daughter's will go the same way. I enjoy reading your blog and I do hope you fall season improves :)

I am so sorry about all your October troubles. I have been reading your blog for quite some time but don't think I have ever commented. I did want to give you some good news that may brighten your spirits! I read an article the other day that said the Hallmark channel is cutting back on some of the Martha and going back to showing Little House on the Prairie. Hopefully this will change soon so you can watch the show again.

You will have to write down these sisterly love comments. Too funny.
Hope your month gets better.
Here is to less drama, at least for a few hours :)
Peace.
Susan
I'm sorry it's been terrible AGAIN! Your stories crack me up, though! I hope your teeth get better. Mine have never been the same since I had jaw surgery for that biopsy this summer; I still have no feeling in two bottom teeth, so I think it's pemanent nerve damage. I'm just waiting to have to get root canals on them, too.

oh my! i got hit in the head a couple of years ago and was glued back together with Dermabond. the stuff is wonderful! :) I used Mederma scar gel for 8 weeks or so after I was completely healed and the scar is not visible at all! thinking about you all-- i hope your October gets a little more mellow :)

Hi Laurie (I am an avid follower of Kelly's blog and wanted to pop over here to say hi). Having had four kids, I have had my share of ER trips for stitches (one each with all four). The first one involved a bathtub fall. Another involved a 20 month sibling popping his sister in the forehead with a plastic vacuum cleaner wand. They were playing swords.

Life as a mother is never dull, is it? God bless!

Something Good to Eat

Ever since Steve and I started dating, when we would go to Mississippi, his aunt would make the BEST ROAST IN THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!!! Steve's Dad's side of the family gets together at his Granny's house for lunch every Sunday after church. The food is always sooo good!!!!!!!!!!!! I have always taken a liking to his Aunt Judy's roast. It really is the best roast I have ever had. When we were there on Labor Day weekend, my sister in law asked Aunt Judy for the recipe. Aunt Judy began naming all the ingredients. She said Ranch Dressing mix, and I bugged my eyes out and nearly chocked. I HATE RANCH DRESSING. I don't even like to be in the room with it. I had to focus on the word MIX....not the mayo and butter milk and sour cream that you add to it. Just typing those words makes me shudder. The recipe sounded awful as she rattled off the ingredients, but I promise, you have got to make this if you like a good roast. Trust me on this. Here it is: Get a tender chuck

Complicated

Maybe I am wrong, but I don't remember life being so complicated when I was in middle school. Everything is so competitive now.  Maybe it was back then and I just didn't realize it. Sarah Kate started playing city league softball a couple of weeks ago.   We've been encouraged to get her private batting lessons. When I was in third grade I started playing softball and I just did it for fun!  No stress at all, as far as I can remember!  I just played.  I wasn't very good, but I liked it! Ha! Emily started band this year!  Before school started, I got a letter from the school district strongly encouraging "your band student to take instrument lessons."  WHAT?  I bought into it and got Emily private clarinet lessons (which she really enjoys)! But, what happened to learning as you go?  I never thought about taking private trumpet lessons when I started band. It seems like most parents are striving for their child to be THE BEST.  I guess that's a go

Life in Pictures!

Emily is enjoying her first year in band.  I am very impressed with her playing skill! Sarah Kate was recently awarded the empathy award at her school.  She is very deserving of this! Here we are before the Cotillion Holly Ball.
