Ice Cream Anyone?

During the Fall Sarah Kate saw a commercial numerous times on the kid's channels advertising an ice cream maker for kids.  She wanted it and would call me over to watch the commercial every time it came on.  We had experience with these kid ice cream makers in the past and they made about 3 table spoons of ice cream.  Not worth it!  I suggested she ask for a REAL ice cream maker.  We have a very nice traditional maker, but it requires lots of ice and rock salt, etc.  In other words, a lot of trouble.
Steve's parents got us this easy breezy ice cream maker for Christmas.  It was our family gift.  SK was thrilled.  This is not the typical time to make ice cream,  but it's fun and new and we HAD to try it out!  In fact, we've tested it three times now!

It would not be right if I didn't share my FAVORITE ice cream recipe!

Let me start by telling you that I guess I have weird taste in ice cream.  I adore ice cream that has a yellow tint to it.  I like my ice cream to have texture: rough and gritty.  As a friend pointed out, your taste in ice cream describes you perfectly, "rough and gritty!"  Ha!  Don't give me any snow white creamy cream.  NO THANKS!  I don't like it!  The ice cream you cook on the stove top first:  YUCK!  I can't stand it.  Heavy whipping cream and sugar does NOT do it for me!  Give me some cream that taste just like SWEETENED CONDENSED MILK!  That's what I'm talking about it!
You MUST TRY THIS RECIPE!!!!
Scott Stamp's (of Kelly Stamps) mom, Judy, shared this recipe with us years ago.  It's all I have ever known.  I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!

On a side note:  SOMETIMES I like Chick-fil-A ice cream.  I have to look at it and determine if I will order it.  If it is white, I pass.  If it is yellow, I order it!  I asked the manager about why it was different of different days.  She explained that when it was yellow it did not mix well and they really should not serve it.  She said the machine did not work well.  I told her that I loved when the machine messed up.  She looked at me like I had 3 eyeballs.

What kind of ice cream do you like?????

Last summer, I tried the recipe floating around pinterest: One pint of heavy cream, one can of condensed milk. Then add your flavors. You don't use an ice cream freezer (we have one similar to yours), you just whip the cream until it's really stiff, then add the condensed milk. I found placing the cream in the freezer for a few minutes, and refrigerating the condensed milk for a day before using really helps. The recipe instructs you to freeze for 6 hours before eating, but I found better results overnight. I made a lemon pie flavored ice cream (using lemon curd found in the jelly section, and crushed graham crackers (for your gritty delight), as well as a little lemon juice) and won grand prize at our church ice cream social (all the way down here in Fayetteville ;) ). I'm not sure I will ever mess with an ice cream freezer again.

This has nothing to do with ice cream, but I had to let you know I made the "Mississippi Roast" from the link from Kelly's Korners blog. It was fantastic and I will definitely make it again. Yum from Wisconsin!

Does this make 2 qts. or do you half the recipe for your ice cream machine? Also, how do you like the new machine? I've been looking at them but wasn't sure which one to get.

Am I to understand from the recipe that it's 2 cans of condensed milk and 2 cans of evaporated milk? Thanks

Something Good to Eat

Ever since Steve and I started dating, when we would go to Mississippi, his aunt would make the BEST ROAST IN THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!!! Steve's Dad's side of the family gets together at his Granny's house for lunch every Sunday after church. The food is always sooo good!!!!!!!!!!!! I have always taken a liking to his Aunt Judy's roast. It really is the best roast I have ever had. When we were there on Labor Day weekend, my sister in law asked Aunt Judy for the recipe. Aunt Judy began naming all the ingredients. She said Ranch Dressing mix, and I bugged my eyes out and nearly chocked. I HATE RANCH DRESSING. I don't even like to be in the room with it. I had to focus on the word MIX....not the mayo and butter milk and sour cream that you add to it. Just typing those words makes me shudder. The recipe sounded awful as she rattled off the ingredients, but I promise, you have got to make this if you like a good roast. Trust me on this. Here it is: Get a tender chuck

Complicated

Maybe I am wrong, but I don't remember life being so complicated when I was in middle school. Everything is so competitive now.  Maybe it was back then and I just didn't realize it. Sarah Kate started playing city league softball a couple of weeks ago.   We've been encouraged to get her private batting lessons. When I was in third grade I started playing softball and I just did it for fun!  No stress at all, as far as I can remember!  I just played.  I wasn't very good, but I liked it! Ha! Emily started band this year!  Before school started, I got a letter from the school district strongly encouraging "your band student to take instrument lessons."  WHAT?  I bought into it and got Emily private clarinet lessons (which she really enjoys)! But, what happened to learning as you go?  I never thought about taking private trumpet lessons when I started band. It seems like most parents are striving for their child to be THE BEST.  I guess that's a go

Life in Pictures!

Emily is enjoying her first year in band.  I am very impressed with her playing skill! Sarah Kate was recently awarded the empathy award at her school.  She is very deserving of this! Here we are before the Cotillion Holly Ball.
