Singleness Part 2

I do feel like the Lord prompted me to post about singleness earlier this week. I certainly think it struck a chord with many women. My thoughts and my writing were simple, but I am glad many of you were encouraged. I read through each comment twice. I feel a real bond with you single ladies that is only understood by women who have been there. As I read through the comments, I just wanted to sit down with you and eat some brownies and talk. I have prayed for you this week!

I have been thinking this week..................perhaps it is harder to be single for women than for men? Men get to initiate the relationship. I often times felt "helpless." There was nothing I could do about my singleness. Then, that brought me to the reality that GOD IS THE MATCHMAKER. I just had to work on being the right woman.

I didn't mention in my earlier post that I was a bridesmaid in nine weddings while I was single. I loved each one, but I wondered when my day would come.
I also decided, in my single days, that renting a good movie, getting a pizza and some cookie dough was better than being on a date I didn't really want to be on.

There is a little book that I used to enjoy called, "How We Met." It tells about unusual meetings that ended in marriage. I recall one of the women met her husband when he parachuted from an airplane and landed in her yard on "accident." I also was encouraged by a song sung by Greg Long called, "In the Waiting."

By the way, I met Steve in my church singles Sunday School class.
I will write more on this subject in the near future.

I had read your previous post earlier this week and commented about how it was what I needed, but I kept meaning to come back to tell you how perfect the timing was! Not even an hour after I read your post, my friends started a Facebook thread about who would be engaged/married within the next year. It's hard to be the odd man out, but I am just so thankful that you took the time to write. It really was a great encouragement at the perfect time!

Hi Laurie,
I read your post earlier in the week, and have been thinking about it all week. Thank you for your encouragement. This post was great timing as well! I have been hearing a lot lately from one of my friends that I am not doing enough to "find" a relationship, and that God will not just bring someone to me. I appreciate your post, and am going to look for that book - it is just what I need to hear this week.
God Bless You!

I remember the first time that I made "the list." You know, the list of qualities that you wanted in a mate. I was in 6th grade on a true love waits retreat.

Over the years, I have made tweaks to the list and have often looked back to those first attempts and laughed.

I'm currently 24. Still have a list. Right now I'm pretty content with my singleness, but about two years ago I was really struggling.

In my dreams, I had always thought I would be married right out of college. As graduation approached, I became more and more upset and sought my mentor for some guidance. She gave me some of the best advice. Something that you touched on.

She encouraged me to read over my list of qualities that I was looking for in a mate and envision him. That wasn't hard at all! Then she told me to imagine that I was that mate and write down the qualities that HE would be looking for in a mate.

I found myself with a list of areas to work on. Who knows, Mr. Perfect-for-me may not be here because God isn't through with ME yet.

Thanks again for sharing your heart! I look forward to reading more singleness posts in the future.

Since I got married when I was 19 (way too young!), I've hardly had trouble with singleness, but I've really enjoyed your "singleness" posts. I'm looking forward to reading more about how you and Steve met.

Laurie, as you know, I was so encouraged by your last post on singleness! I am touched by this one too and love the thought of God being the matchmaker. Cupid ain't got nothing on the big Guy upstairs. :-) Thanks for sharing your heart about this - can't wait to read more.

P.S. I am now thinking about moving near a small airport in hopes of one day finding a handsome, wayward parachuter in my backyard. :-)

I met my husband online!!! ha! I had actually JUST been through a breakup from a 5 year long relationship that I thought was going to end in marriage, but the marriage talk is what scared him off..(gosh how often does that happen? yeah all the time) and I went online as a joke with my sister just to see, and got lots of creepsters, and ONE email from a sweet southern boy who was new to my city. IWe talked on and off for 2 months before we talked on the phone and then met in person. At one point I lost contact with him for a month and it was just on my heart to somehow get back in touch so I had to pay the singles site to get his contact info (if you don't have an account on some sites they won't let you see addresses)

Anyway, that was 6 years ago, and I never thought it would happen to me.

I prayed and had a list too...and my husband met everything on MY list too!

Looking forward to hearing more of what you have to say on this!!! Lord knows, us singles need it :) Thank you for your encouragement! We love ya for it!
I love your posts and it's true that you can meet your spouse in "different" places. I met mine on a airplane as he was commuting to work. He's a pilot and was flying from Atlanta to Chicago, as was I. Amazing how God works!

Hi Laurie~
Came over from Kelly's blog. Thank you so much for the encouragement on singleness. I'm 32 and still single. Lately, it's been really hard, because the one desire I have is to be a wife...to be able to share my life with someone. I've been on many blind dates, but nothing pans out. I've done the Lady in Waiting devotional and yes, it's great! Anyways, I could go on and on, but I really just wanted to say I would appreciate your prayers!
Thanks!

My friend sent me a link to your blog when you posted your first singleness post and I was so encouraged and I meant to comment then but I forgot. So I just wanted to say I have enjoyed both of your posts about singleness! Since I read your post I have started the Lady in Waiting devotional and LOVE it! Thanks!!

So I know this post was from a while ago, but I've been meaning to comment. I saw this linked from Kelly and I almost lost it when I read it. I know it's the second part to 'singleness' but it just hit so close to home... even more so then the first. You see, I just turned 29 and I've been to/a part of 5 weddings so far this year (all in the month of June) with about 3 more to go and two more already planned for early next year, not to mention the other 7 that I've already been in before this year. It's like I'm seeing all of my friends get married off and I've ben feeling left behind... Anyway, i'm sure that's more then you cared to know about, but all of it was to say, that you for posting these blogs. It's so nice and so rare to hear from someone who REALLY gets it. Blessings to you and your lovely family... and thanks for praying for us single girls... =o)

I found your blog through Kelly when she posted a link on her blog telling the single women they needed to come read your first post on singleness. But, I never came back and read Part 2 until today.
I can relate to your story in so many ways. I am 21 and about to be in my 7th wedding. I have never been in a relationship. I have always had the mind set that God will send me the right man for me in His timing but the longer I wait the more impatient I get.
I too have a long list of things I want in a guy and everytime I tell someone about it they just laugh. It makes me wonder if I do set my standards too high.
Anyways, these 2 post on singleness really blessed my heart and I thank you so much for sharing your story. So many of us out here need to hear stories like yours. Thanks again!

Complicated

Maybe I am wrong, but I don't remember life being so complicated when I was in middle school. Everything is so competitive now.  Maybe it was back then and I just didn't realize it. Sarah Kate started playing city league softball a couple of weeks ago.   We've been encouraged to get her private batting lessons. When I was in third grade I started playing softball and I just did it for fun!  No stress at all, as far as I can remember!  I just played.  I wasn't very good, but I liked it! Ha! Emily started band this year!  Before school started, I got a letter from the school district strongly encouraging "your band student to take instrument lessons."  WHAT?  I bought into it and got Emily private clarinet lessons (which she really enjoys)! But, what happened to learning as you go?  I never thought about taking private trumpet lessons when I started band. It seems like most parents are striving for their child to be THE BEST.  I guess that's a go

Something Good to Eat

Ever since Steve and I started dating, when we would go to Mississippi, his aunt would make the BEST ROAST IN THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!!! Steve's Dad's side of the family gets together at his Granny's house for lunch every Sunday after church. The food is always sooo good!!!!!!!!!!!! I have always taken a liking to his Aunt Judy's roast. It really is the best roast I have ever had. When we were there on Labor Day weekend, my sister in law asked Aunt Judy for the recipe. Aunt Judy began naming all the ingredients. She said Ranch Dressing mix, and I bugged my eyes out and nearly chocked. I HATE RANCH DRESSING. I don't even like to be in the room with it. I had to focus on the word MIX....not the mayo and butter milk and sour cream that you add to it. Just typing those words makes me shudder. The recipe sounded awful as she rattled off the ingredients, but I promise, you have got to make this if you like a good roast. Trust me on this. Here it is: Get a tender chuck

Life in Pictures!

Emily is enjoying her first year in band.  I am very impressed with her playing skill! Sarah Kate was recently awarded the empathy award at her school.  She is very deserving of this! Here we are before the Cotillion Holly Ball.
